Things I have Learned from Hostel Life
Schools and colleges are about to reopen. Some colleges have opened already. When it comes to school and college, not everyone is fortunate enough to have their home and college in the same city.
Due to this, many students have to stay in a hostel or as paying guests.
If you are one of these students, this can be the time of your life. In my case, it was.
I have stayed in the hostel for about 6 years. First, it was during my graduation in Hotel Management that was in Nagpur. The second time I stayed in the hostel for my Master's was in Mumbai.
If there is anything I have learned from these past 6 years that is:
1) Getting good roommates who are like family is everything.
2) Ready to eat Indian food is a blessing.
3) How to use money wisely.
Those who have stayed in the hostel, know what I am talking about. Those who are moving into a hostel or PG are about to find out.
Blessing: Good Roommates
Good roommates are like rain in the village from the Lagan movie. You have prayed and cried for good roommates. Then if you are lucky, you get one good roommate. If you are the luckiest, you will get good roommates. Plural.
I was one of those luckiest people.
I still remember the first day when I moved into the hostel for the first time. My roommate came to talk to me when I was unpacking and started to go through my stuff. She was talking about her crush on this guy. Whom I had not seen and was asking for my opinion on what she should do.
You will probably find the wired. But she has been my best friend for the past 8 years.
When I moved to a hostel for the second time, I found the most amazing roommates you can ever hope for. We all were from different colleges. But we all lived like a family.
These people are still a huge part of my life. The hostel gives you a chance to make friends for life.
Worst Nightmare: Mess food
You must have heard the stories about how disgusting and bland hostel food can be. All those stories are probably true. The food in my hostel was so bad. It was ironic because it was a Hotel Management college but hostel food was low quality.
It was so bad that we had to keep a lot of ready-to-eat Indian foods handy. Because we never know when we are going to need it.
Out favorite to go ready-made Indian food was of course Maggy.
We had kept an induction stove hidden from our warden. We used to make maggy all the time, especially for dinner.
Later our warden found out about the induction. By that time we were the most senior students in the hostel. We politely informed the warden we were not going to stop using it anytime soon.
If you are going to survive in a hostel where mess food is not so great, you have to keep ready to eat Indian food close by.
Skills Learned: Money Saving
We have it so easy when we stay at home. We never think twice before buying anything. But when you stay in the hostel, you check the price of every product before you buy them. Your thought process changes. You start to buy the essential stuff only.
We got so conscious about spending money that we researched which ready-to-eat food was the most affordable for us.
I still have that habit with me. I still think twice before buying something, whether I need it or not.
